Stacey Bear - Spun Cotton Ornaments
Stacey Bear creates narrative paintings based on the folk art tradition but with a contemporary and slightly humorous edge. People (with their odd pets), birds and animals are her favored subjects. Layers of acrylic paint are built up to create luminosity and antique frames finish the piece. The obscure art of creating spun cotton ornaments began as a 19th c. German cottage industry for the Christmas market. Santas, snow people, Halloween and Easter figures and animals take shape as Stacey meticulously paints the tiny faces which are sculpted from paper clay. Strips of cotton batting are wrapped and wrapped around an armature. Garments of cotton batting are stiffened with a secret concoction of glues and paint and the final touch of antique and vintage adornments complete the ornament.
